Threadless T-Shirt design

Threadless

The Threadless T-Shirt Design competition falls under the catagory of an 'ongoing' competition (as in there is no real deadline). Designs are submitted throught the Companies T-Shirt design website and then they are scored by all the threadless members for a period of one week. After this week has elapsed than the average score is calculated and prizes can be won. In addition to this If a design proves to be very popular then threadless will use It on their product netting the designer/artist a tidy sum. Threadless hav awarded over $7 million (U.S) to artists since they website first began. The additional products that you have your design printed on can include T-shirts, hoodies, caps, Iphone cases and water bottles.

When coming up with your design, Think of some original, It can definately be influenced by film, T.V music and art but If I go down the path of movie related design then I will try and keep the ideas fresh and add my own twist to it. Humour will be a focus for me. The first step is to join the threadlerss community, (compulsory for applicants) and start commenting and scoring other T-shirt designs. Leaving fair scores and offering postive comments/constructive critism is probably the best way to get positive feedback for your own design; It starts to get you thinking about the whole process and gets you involved with the other artists.

A Piece Of Cake

After coming up with the design Idea I need to add it into the 'Threadless' template and work from there. That way the the Threadless website will be able to monitor my progress and keep me working to the 1 week time limit. Some good ways to improve the overall score of your T-shirt design and give a better chance of either winning a prize include using the forum, commenting on others work and ask for opinions from the threadless community. having your work become a mass produced image for T-shirts and other merchendise, cash prizes and illustrative fame all some of the things that can happen as a result of a successful design.

Above: A zombie take on the cartoon series 'Scooby Doo'. Scooby Doo was a chicldrens murder mystery cartoon with adult themes and undertones. This rendition of the two characters Velma Dinkley and Scooby Doo is a little more realistic than the original and adds some other gore elements in keeping with the zombie motif.

Above: This Is a classic sight gag that needs no text or any explination, it just works.

The finished design may take a day or two to go up and after that it gets scored fo 7 days.
Threadless releases new shirts twice a week, and often puts a fun twist on movies, tv, and pop culture. Check their site every Monday and Thursday. Submit a design and if enough people vote on your shirt and threadless makes it, you'll get $2000 cash, a $500 gift cerificate, and $500 if your shirt is reprinted. Likely the best site for your designs, but competition is high. This site was previously known to me and I have browsed it before, cosidering on entering a design. I think that due to the subject matter of the majority of the entries (Film, T.V, Music, Pop Culture) that I could come up with more than one or two designs, also due to the continous turnover of the designs, I could enter numerous designs over the period of the ADIP32 Module.

Above: A spoof of  well known fight scene from Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill'. The artist has replaced the main character with a yellow bird (probably canary) and the black  ninja's with black cats.

Threadless - Breaking Bad x Dexter's Laboratory “Dexter White”.png

This Clever designs combines two very popular but very different T.V shows from different generations. The first is the American cartoon 'Dexters Laboratory' (1996-2003) and the other is the AMC drama 'Breaking bad' (2007-2013). The two characters combining to make this one design are 'Dexter' and 'Walter White'. The design is aptly called 'Dexter White'. Besides the ongoing entries for T-shirt designs of any genre, style or theme, Threadless also hold seperate contests for specificly themed designs.

  Threadless + Arcade Fire

Design a T-Shirt inspired by the music of Arcade Fire.

The band 'Arcade Fire' rose to fame with the release of their commercially and critically successful and 2011 Grammy, Album of the Year winninf album, Funeral. The blurb with the competition brief asks the applicants to think about Arcade Fire, who they are, and how can their image be lent to a popular and inovative design. 25% of sales from the winning design will go to 'Partners in Health', The international oranization devoted to bringing high quality health care to the world poorest in Haiti and 10 other countries around the world. There is a list of steps to follow for potential applicants which starts with reading the submission details/guideline to learn about printing techniques, creating high resolution artwork, preparing presentation files and a few other rules to follow. There are a few colour specifications and downloadable assets like templates and blank photos for mockups.

Once the design files have been prepared, then the next step is submission. There is a submission form to fill out. The same system as the regular competition is employed for the this contest as well. The Threadless community scores your design 1 to 5 and leaves comments on your design. These scores and comments help the judges to pick the final designs to be be judged for the winning place. Threadless enourage all aplicants to to promote their work to friend, family and everyone else they can.
The prizes for this one are pretty decent but like the regular T-Shirt design, competition will be fierce. There is a cash Prize of $2000 cash or £1200, a $250/£150 gift code, an autographed Vinyl 'Arcade Fire' LP and an autographed Arcade Fire poster.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Create a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde insired design.

Robert louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a classic good vs evil story with a twist. The characters are the two seperate personalities of one man. An instant success upon publication in  1886 it sold thousands of copies and was then adapted to stage and film. Stevensons story also influenced other similar charecter in modern fiction such as 'The Hulk' and Harvey 'Two Face' Dent, who both too, have split personalities.  The shirt design should represent both characters in some way, the good and the evil. 25% of the sales from the T-Shirt will go to benefit the 'Robert Louis Stevenson Silverado Museum'.

The competition constraints for this brief are identical to that of the Arcade Fire competition. But the prizes are different. The prizes include $750/£500 in cash, A $250/£150, a leatherbound set of Louis Stevensons: Seven Novels.
