adbusters

Adbusters was one of the jobs posts on the 'job wall' blog that first took my interest. I have read the magazine before and I am relatively aware of the type of work, themes and issues within it.

The Adbusters Media Foundation is a Canadian-based non-profit, anti-consumerist, pro-environment organisation, founded in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and BillSchmalz in Vancouver. Adbusters describes it'self as a "global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.

Adbusters is most recognised by it's bi-monthly magazine which has been characterised as anti-capitalist and challenges consumerism whilst trying to promote free-thinking. Adbusters was responsible for numerous international campaigns, including 'Buy Nothing Day', 'TV Turnoff week' and 'Occupy Wall Street'. The magazine is well known for what is called 'subadvertisments', commercials that spoof advertisements. The magazine is sold in America, Canada, Australia, UK, France, Norway, sweden and Japan.

"We publish the most provocative, emotionally stirring and heretical ideas in the geopolitical, environmental, psychological, activist and social arenas."

The work submission page states that Adbusters is loooking for "radical transformations need for a collective future, "one that computes at a economic, ecological and spiritual level."
Essays, poems, rants, articles, features, spoofs, art, photos, designs, graffiti, scribbles, jams and mindbombs – all forms welcome.

Some individuals that have had work published in Adbusters over the years include John Ralstaon Saul, Chris Hedges, Susan George, Bill Mckibben, Margaret Atmood, Simon Critchlt, Antonio Negri.

The website offers some advise to potential applicants saying that artists wanting to send work in should think outside their own environment. They recommend reading a few back issues of the magazine to get a good idea of the attitudes and styles conveyed to the readers. Due to the two week turnover of the magazine any work submitted must have a philosophical and topical shelf life beyond just the date of when the work is submitted.

Contact details for submissions can be sent by email and mail:
Email: editor@adbuster.org
Mail: Attn Editor/ Art Department.

Information regarding submissions: All pictures, photographs, posters, sketches, projects, subverts, anarchist designs to be sent in. All Jpegs should be 72dpi minimum. Prints should be duplicates or colour copies as they do not return submissions. If the artwork is large, it should be documented and submitted as photographs or emailed Jpegs. Work is to be labelled clearly with name and contact information. If the work submitted is liked then they will contact the artist, though it may take some time.
